Vernacular Housing

The Tongkonan Vernacular House (s) are found in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, and is contracted by the locals known as the Torajan people. The dwelling serves many separate functions apart from simply living. For the Torajan, the dwelling itself holds religious connotations. These constructions are always oriented north, in order to face the heavens . Each of the three primary vertical zones of the house symbolize either hell, the living realm, or the heavens, starting from the basement going to the attic. The house serves as a sort of spiritual journey which serves to elevate it from just a complex construction into something more meaningful for the Torajan people. Many rituals are performed here and thus the house typology serves as an integral cornerstone to the Torajan.
